HT #3 1550 with Cole

Created on January 1, 2006 (Last modified on November 17, 2007)

HT #3 done by Cole and team over 3 days (12-14-05 to 12-16-05). 1550 grafts in the frontal 3rd. The hairline is 0.75cm deep, packed with single hair grafts. Behind them are natural groupings, not cut up FUs. Also did 580 leg hair into donor area. Scar repair was about 130 leg and remaining as Fit Farming. The yield in the frontal recipient was good. To the casual observer it all looks good, especially if viewed from the front or sides. Up through 13 months however the quality is similar to HT2; kinky and weird angled if viewed up close. Especially true if viewed looking down onto the top of my head. I must avoid bending my head down in front of close people in well lit areas. Optimum hair length is 1/2 inch. Anything over 1 inch looks a bit strange. Anything over 1.5 inches looks damn strange. As of 23 months this still seems to be the case. The good news is the increased density has made a cosmetic improvement. The disappointing news was the grafts into my HT2 scars. Almost none of them grew. Maybe a couple head hair grew, but none of the BHT grew. Cole did warn me my scars were thick and grizzly, the probably of success was low. I can’t knock him for trying since he did not charge me for the BHT. Hard to tell what of the Fit Farming grew. It appears at least some did, but it’s inconclusive.

The money shot. 1550 grafts in about 60 cm2 area. Obviously this is not evenly packed. The hairline is single hair grafts with a smaller punch.

Back, end of surgery

Zoom

Lots to tell here. 1550 FUE extractions, stripped at a rate of about 20%. Then put about 130 BHT in the moderate old linear scar and 3 circular scar areas. About 450 leg hair Fit Farmed into 1550 donor holes.

Legs, end of surgery

Zoom

580 leg hairs were taken. I choose the lower legs since they were least affected by Finesteride. Wraped with gauze and Neosporin for the first 3 days. Then used Emu oil by day and Hydrocortisone at night.

Front, day 7

Zoom

Using the Biotin spray to control redness and scabing. Worked well. My scabs tend to hang on for 7 to 14 days.

Back, day 7

Zoom

Many scabs have fallen off. Used the Biotin spray and Emu oil during the day. Also caked on Aloe at night.

Front, day 14

Zoom

2 small scabs remain. Some of the transplants in the frontal tip have fallen out. Most behind them remain. Notice how the redness is virtually non-existant. I think the Biotin spray helped a lot. Looks good overall.

Back, day 14

Zoom

Downrezing to fit under 200kB limit gives a blurry pic here. Flash was used in this one. 2 of 3 round scar holes (from previous strip work with DeYarman) are all thats really obvious here. In a close visual inspection you can see the punch scars as areas of pinkness, but it's really not obvious.

Legs, day 14

Zoom

The legs have hardly changed at all since day 3. Still just areas of shaved hair with red dots. Using Emu oil by day and Hydrocortisone 2.5% at night.

Front, day 21

Zoom

The last week has not been good. Apparently I'm allergic to Emu oil, which I was using 24/7. I stopped using it on day 19, but not before my skin became VERY red and pealing. Look carefully and you can see some nastyness. Back to using the Biotin spray. More transplants have fallen out. Damn I look like crap now.

Back, day 21

Zoom

The Emu oil did the same number on my donor. Not easy to see here but my donor became a big rash/zit farm. Itched like a mofo! Unlike the recipient, it started to improve within 24 hours of stopping the Emu oil (stopped 2 days before this pic). Now spraying with Biotin and using caked on Aloe with Lidocane at night.

Front, week 4

Zoom

The redness and pealing subsided when I stoped the Emu oil. Been using Aloe and yesterday started Hydrocortisone 1%. Recovering well, but the redness has a long way to go. Damn that Emu oil.

Back, week 4

Zoom

Like the front I'm recovering in the donor. Had my first haircut today. Need to keep it as long as possible in the back to hide the circular and linear scars. Hopefully the BHT grafts into the scars take. Upon close inspection you can see the FUE/FIT work too, but my previous crappy strip work is much more noticeable. Aloe days, Hydro 1% nights.

Legs, week 4

Zoom

Hardly changed since about the 3rd day. A few (maybe 20%) have started to have their outer diameter of redness shrink in. It's a slow process; I think this will take a few more weeks to heal completely. Using skin moisturiser by day and Hydrocortisone 2.5% at night.

Front, week 6

Zoom

Redness reamains unchanged. I've been using the hydro 1% at night and some days. Not doing anything for me. Looks like I'm going to be stuck with a very red head for several more weeks. Noticed that I have much less hair now than at week 4. I'm assuiming the last of the transplants fell out. The ugly duckling phase is in full force.

Back, week 6

Zoom

Almost all of the redness is gone. Coverage of the linear and circular scars continues to improve. Not much can been seen of the FUE/FIT scars anymore; you have to look very closely. Not applying anything anymore.

Legs, week 6

Zoom

Legs have finally improved a lot. Most of the extraction sites have lost significant redness, but it varies. Some areas are just whiteish dots while others are still red. Only using skin moisturizer now.

Front, week 8

Zoom

The redness has gotten worse in the last 2 weeks. I stopped using hydro 1% and used aloe at night. I was concerned long term use of hydro might hurt the graft's blood supply. It appears to have been the wrong move, at least from a redness point of view. I talked with a dermatologist on the phone. He thinks I have a chemical burn like situation from the minox intolerance after HT2 and then the Emu oil allergic reaction.

Legs, week 8

Zoom

With the exception of one or two holes, all of the redness of the extraction sites are gone. For those who are counting; it took me between 4 and 8 weeks for the red dots to fade to white dots with slight indentations. The back/donor looks the same as week 6 so no need to post the pic.

Front, week 12

Zoom

Redness is unchanged. Will get into a dermatologist in a few weeks, finally. There was some shockloss of HT2 hair, most of which has returned. There are a few small gap areas in the frontal tip region that have not come back yet. A few small nubs of HT3 hair have started to pop up. With these downrezed pics you can't see them yet. Now the fun begins.

Legs, week 12

Zoom

I marked the donor areas since they are no longer obvious. Formerly telogen/resting hairs are slowly coming back to fill in the areas. Note that I partialy shaved around the donor areas to help conceal the obviousness of the hairless areas.

Front, week 17 (4 months)

Zoom

Started using Olux foam and Clobex shampoo for scalp redness. Strong stuff (prescription only). After 10 days I see some improvement. 10 more days of treatment left. Might be some new hair growth, but I don't really see it yet.

Back, week17 (4 months)

Zoom

Hair has continued to grow back. I told my hair cutter to try to leave it as thick around the back as possible. No sign of the scars.

Legs, week17 (4 months)

Zoom

You have to look hard to see the white dots with slight indentations.

Front, 5 months

Zoom

Good progress in the last last 5 weeks. Clobex shampoo helped the redness. Good growth for this phase of development. Can't make any judgements on hair quality yet. It's good to look in the mirror in the morning.

Front, 6 months

Zoom

Progress continues. Redness keeps coming back. I just treat it with Clobex for a couple days and it dissipates... only to return a couple weeks later. With more hair it's less noticeable. Length is about 3/4 inch here. Strong growth in the left side hairline, possibly overcompensating and now noticeably thicker than the right. That left hairline does a group tilt forward creating a part from the area behind the hairline. I hope this evens out long term. Hair quality is still questionable. They all seem to have their own angles. Almost impossible to tell the difference between HT2 and HT3 hair. To the casual observer it all looks good. Closer inspection reveals the weird angles.

Legs, 6 months

Zoom

Almost impossible to tell anything has been done. The hair density in the donor areas are slightly thinner and some (but not all) areas have small white dots remaining, but you really have to do a careful inspection to see anything.

Front, 7 months

Zoom

Hair length is just over 1 inch. I need a haircut bad! Skin still has a pinkishness to it. Not using Clobex. Yield is looking good though. Quality you ask? Varies.

Legs, 7 months

Zoom

I dare anyone to detect anything in this pic. Even the high rez original is pristine.

Front, 8 months

Zoom

This is a worst case pic: flash and upclose. You can easily see where work has been done. The transplants are kinky and semi-random angled. I don't think they were planted that way, they just grow that way. You can also see how Cole has somewhat over compensated my left hairline density. Going into IHTI my DeYarman grafts were thinner density on the left side and I asked Cole to pack denser along the left side and even it out. Now the left side is denser than my right. It also does a group tilt forward, forming a part from the hair behind it. Since this shows the results from two very different docs and techniques I'm guessing either my physiology is playing a part or the skin iritation has retarded my grafts.
