My Hair Loss History

Last updated on May 6, 2005

My sad tale. Get your tissues out:

Started losing at age 17. Yeah, it sucked when the cure girl sitting behind me in homeroom noticed the hair on the back of my shirt! Looked good (or good enough) through first few years after college. Noticable diffuse thinning by age 25 (maybe a NW 4). Norwood 6 by age 30. Yuck!

Like any good hair-drug addict, I've had a long and underwhelming history with meds:

I've been on Minoxidil 2% w/Retin A since age 24 with some OK results. Started 5% at age 27 and propecia at 28. Propecia helped some, but I stopped for 6 months, had a major shed and never got back what I lost. I was back on until just now switching to Avodart. I also had a major shed after quitting Minoxidil 3 months prior to my surgery...I guess that crap was actually working. It gave me decent coverage in the crown and back that was gone by surgery day.

"Slice me up, Doc"

I never considered surgery since every one I had seen always looked bad. That is, until a friend started researching his own surgery and went to Dr. Feller with pretty good results (except that he only did about 1/3 of his head). That's when I decided if I'm going to do it, I would only go if I could get a large enough session to make the investment and waiting worthwhile. In my view, the only choice with my extensive hairloss was Hasson and Wong. I went to Dr. Wong and the experience was first rate! The doc and his staff were super-professional, had a great sense of humor and made a really big chicken feel at ease. Plus, both the surgery and days after were surprisingly painless. Now, only time will tell if Dr. Wong and team have delivered the goods in terms of results...

So, here I am, looking retarded; all sliced up with 5038 mini-stab wounds to the head, waiting for my follicles to grow. In a way it seems kind of trite and stupid, but let's face it, looks and money matter - no matter how much we want to be loved for our sparkling wit and personality.
