My Hair Loss History

My hair situation is quite uncommon in so far as I have no hairloss, but was born with deeply receded temples. When I was about 10 years old, I realised that my father, who was 45 at that time, has a better hairline than me. It is still a mystery for me how it is possible to be born with such a birth defect and I have never seen a ten year old boy with a hairline like mine. The positive thing about my situation is however, that I am now 29 years old and have not lost any hair in my life and my hairline has not changed a single mm. I had a tiny strip surgery at the age of 25 at MMG which resulted in a wide scar and very thin growth. I had the scar revised in Jan 04 by Dr. Hasson. He was able to at least reduce the width to half if not a third of the original size of the Moser scar. In Jan 05, I am having an FUE surgery with Dr. Feller. As none of my relatives is more than NW3, I would like to get a very dense and rather low hairline and I will also have my scar filled with FUEs. You can see my pics when you click on "Me and my congenital triangular alopecia". The first pic was taken when I was 15 and the original pic shows that I have no hair at my temple area but that the hair is just combed in a way so that it covers the recession. Unfortuanetely the quality of this scanned version of the pic does not really show this. The next 2 pics show my hairline at the age of 18. On these two pics you can see my recession at my left temple area, which was always less than on the right side. My right temple area can best be seen in pic "age28". This pic was taken immediately after placement of 477 grafts that Dr. Hasson had to take out in the course of the scar revision. Please note that Dr. Hasson has just shaved the few hairs from my first transplant but he has not shaved any of my original hair and he has not transplanted in between my original hair. This would not be possible as my hairline is just recessed but as I have no hair loss, there is no thinning either. Therefore the long hair in pic "age28" shows the shape of my original non-transplanted hairline how it has always looked like!!! As you can probably imagine, for me, especially when I was a young teenager, this hairline was a NIGHTMARE.
At the beginning of Jan 2005 I had an FUE surgery with Dr. Feller.
I got 1150 grafts. 1,000 were put into my hairline and 150 into my scar. Dr. Feller was able to extract almost 1100 grafts the first day! He has partially worked into an area where Dr. Hasson has already planted grafts about a year ago to increase the density even more. And he has lowered my hairline on both sides where he must have achieved a density of around 80 grafts/cm2 (my guess).
Dr. Feller does not use 1mm punches any more AS HIS EXPERIENCE IS THAT a 1mm extraction tool is not necessary. Almost all of my 1150 FUE grafts were extracted with the 0.8 mm Feller punch. And just for a very low number of grafts he needed to use the 0.9 mm Feller punch mainly because of a change in my skin structure and because he was looking for the largest follicular units that he could find for putting them into my scar. Please take into consideration that NOT THE DIAMETER BUT THE SURFACE of the tissue that is punched out by an extraction tool is the main factor that determines the "detectibility" (when shaved) of the extraction scar. THe surface of a 0. 8 mm punch scar is not more than 12 percent larger than that of a 0.75 mm punch. So that is negligable. However, a 1mm EXTRACTION TOOL HAS A SURFACE THAT is 23.5 percent larger than that of a 0.9 mm punch. And a 1mm punch is even 56!!! percent larger than a 0.8 mm punch.
Another highly important factor that determines if the scar is invisible to the naked eye or not is the quality of the punch. Dr. Feller has done a lot of research to optimise his own Feller punches and they are made of the hardest surgical steel that is available in the world.
Another thing that I find very interesting is that Dr. Feller told me that he intends to get several small FUE sessions himself soon. He told me that the problem with strip is that he would have to take some time off from work but this is not possible for him as he is simply too busy. With FUE, however, it is absolutely no problem that he can have an FUE session himself on a Friday and than perform a transplant on one of his patients on Monday himself. I can testify that FUE is pain free and I would say I have almost zero swelling.
Futhermore, what I found also very interesting is that Dr. Feller told me that he has got an identical twin brother and he is going to perform FUE on him. Dr. Feller told me that he could not strip his twin brother, but with FUE it is much easier for him to work on his own brother. |
