My Hair Loss History

The usual story. I knew in high school I would be loosing my hair but did not really see the loss until mid 20s. At age 32 I got 309 micrographs with John P Lenhart in Fla (HT1). Not bad results given the technology. By age 42, with no meds, natural recession had taken over. I should have done something a few years earlier (propecia).
In August 2004 started some research on another web site where they promoted a Coalition. Checked out a recommended local doctor and met with a current patient who had work done similar to my desires. All seemed good with Dr. Jim DeYarman. HT2 on 11/18/04 went okay but the results were disappointing.
Next time had to be great results, no room for error. My donor is limited and I now have poor donor laxity. I know that doing another strip to get more grafts and do a scar revision is the smartest move. However I don't have the laxity for more strip work. So FUE it is. Did 8 months of research. Signed up for 1500 grafts with John Cole over 3 days starting 12/14/05.
On HT3 surgery day I got the shave down. That was when I saw the 3 circular scars from the last HT. The plan had to change. Lack of head donor means we needed some BHT work too for the linear and circular scars. Ended up with 1550 in the front, about 130 BHT into the scars, and about 450 FIT Farmed into the donor holes. I have a generally good impression of my results from IHTI. The recipient yielded well, but also has the kinky issues I experienced with HT2. However none of the BHT into the scar grew.
HT4 was my last surgery. I picked strip for two reasons: scar revision and HT3’s FUE thinned me out as far as I want to go. For me, the choice of doctor was easy: H&W. After a consultation with Joetronic we agreed on Dr. Hasson. I did my scalp exercises for 3 months and set the date for March 6th 2007.
In the day before surgery consultation my donor laxity limitations became apparent. Since I wanted a scar revision we would only be able to get about 1500 grafts. A bit disappointing, but still provided a good increase in density. After 7 months it appears almost all of it has come in and the scar is excellent. Only negative is much of the transplants were gray hair from my sides instead of brown hair from the back. My frontal 3rd recipient zone is noticeably grayer now.
My total harvest has been 4654 follicular units, plus 309 micrografts: ~5000 total. My donor is completely consumed to the level I believe acceptable for someone with fine straight hair at 44.
Overall I wish I could say my results are excellent, but I can't. I have a critical eye and to me the quality of sections of my HT hair do not match my natural straight hair. To the casual observer it's great, but up close it's not natural due to kinkiness and parting if it gets longer than about 1 inch. This is visible in some of my pictures. My theory is 6 months of minoxidil intolerance after HT2 retarded all grafts afterward, but I’m speculating.
Looking back on all this I have learned: 1) Everyone should do their research for at least 6 months on multiple forum sites. I personally like this one because it's not total anarchy nor a BS Coalition. 2) Think and plan long term. Remember, you can’t just add a couple thousand grafts in the hairline and be done. Once on the HT bandwagon you are on it for life chasing future loss. 3) The average person around the age of 30 has a total available donor range between 5K and 10K. 4) Do not let travel be a limiting factor in choosing your doctor. Resist the temptation to stay local. 5) You must see a few HTs in person before you pull the trigger. Preferably of people like yourself from doctors you are considering. Some people have fantasies of results. Some doctors post glamour shots. Pictures lie! 6) Donor thinning as most guys approach middle age (40s, 50s) is unpredictable and damn scary. 7) Most people underestimate the number of grafts necessary to do the job (hair greed) and the mediocre docs prefer small sessions to get you to come back in a year. 8) Coupled with item 7 above, getting several small sessions instead of one megasession IMO is a waste of time, money, and total available donor. This all happened to me. Megasessions rule! |
