HAIRLOSSHELP:
Tell us about your company.
STEVEN
PORTER:
Osmotics was started by my wife Francine and myself in 1993.
Our goal has been to make Osmotics the world's premiere skin
care company - to achieve and introduce a new level of real
results in cosmeceutical and dermaceutical skin care treatments.
We have done this by combining patented delivery technologies
with scientifically proven ingredients, Osmotics is on the
cutting edge of cosmeceutical and therapeutic skin care. This
innovative, unprecedented strategy is the cornerstone of Osmotics
philosophy.
We
also work with leading university medical centers and renowned
scientists around the world to utilize the latest breakthroughs
and most advanced thinking in developing truly effective products.
These unique formulations feature proven technologies and
patented compounds from the biopharmaceutical and biotechnological
fields. All product claims have been validated through independent
clinical testing, a first in this industry.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
How
much are your annual gross revenues?
STEVEN
PORTER: Osmotics
is a privately held and does not publicly disclose financial
details.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
Where
or how are your existing products currently sold?
STEVEN
PORTER: Our
products are sold at Sak's Fifth Avenue stores, Bergdorf Goodman's,
Nordstrom's, Sephora's, Jacobsen's, through our website, and
other leading stores.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
What
made you enter the hair loss market?
STEVEN
PORTER: We
only enter a market when we believe that we can bring an innovative
and significant improvement based on scientifically credible
evidence. We are not interested in me-too products. When we
learned about Professor Lindenbaum's work we were very interested.
Although our focus has been on skin care, when we examined
the data from the double-blind study in Israel, we knew that
this technology was very significant and that millions of
people would benefit from its commercialization.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
I
believe that your company already licenses ProCyte's copper
peptide for use in your skin care line. American Crew recently
licensed the Tricomin copper peptide, why did you decide to
license Piliel when you could have licensed Tricomin like
American Crew?
STEVEN
PORTER: Osmotics
was the first company to create a product based on copper
peptides. We did in fact license a copper peptide from ProCyte
but that relationship has ended. Our current copper products
are based on formulations that Osmotics has developed. We
licensed the Piliel technology based on our review of the
scientific data.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
How
did you meet Prof Lindenbaum, were you looking for a hair
loss product and found her or did she find you?
STEVEN
PORTER: Professor
Lindenbaum's technology was listed as a technology that was
available for licensing on the Technion Institute's technology
transfer site. As we are always looking for innovative and
significant technologies, we decided to investigate this opportunity.
We contacted the Technion and they put us in touch with Professor
Lindenbaum.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
Lets talk about Piliel. FNS has a past history as Piliel so
we need to know more about Piliel so we can see your product
in the correct perspective. Why did Life Medical Sciences
terminate its clinical trials of Piliel? The initial small-scale
studies by Prof Lindenbaum seemed so promising?
STEVEN
PORTER: In
developing a new product, it is critically important to work
closely with the inventor. It is our understanding that Professor
Lindenbaum was not consulted regarding Life Medical Sciences's
formulation of the product. As a result, the original formulation
that was so promising in the Israeli study did not perform
well at all in the European study. The formulation had been
changed to include a bulking agent that reversed the flow
of moisture and drew moisture up from the dermis into the
epidermis. This adversely affected the ability of the nutrients
in the formula to reach the hair follicles. We are pleased
to have met with Professor Lindenbaum and she is an active
participant in the formulation and development of FNS.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
Do
you have the results from the Piliel trial since they were
never made public?
STEVEN
PORTER: Yes,
we have the results and Professor Lindenbaum has submitted
them for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
How
does FNS differ from Piliel?
STEVEN
PORTER: FNS
is based on the original formula that was tested in the Israeli
double-blind study. The formulation has been improved to increase
the targeting of hair follicles.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
Is
it the exact same formulation developed by Prof Lindenbaum?
STEVEN
PORTER: The
ingredients are the same, the delivery vehicle has been changed
to create a commercial product that is user friendly. In the
Israeli study, the formula was delivered in syringes for use
by the study participants.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
What
clinical trials has Osmotics conduced on FNS?
STEVEN
PORTER: Osmotics
is planning additional studies and will keep you advised once
the results are publicly available. Based on our review of
the Israeli data, we believe that we had sufficient information
to launch a product based on the original formula. That data
will be publicly available following publication in the medical
journal.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
The
pictures that are on your web site now, are they from Prof
Lindenbaum's initial trial or the Piliel European trials?
STEVEN
PORTER: Those
photos are from the Israeli double-blind study.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
Who
do you think would respond best to FNS from what you have
seen from the clinical trials?
STEVEN
PORTER: FNS
is a product that we believe will help anyone who still has
hair follicles. The trial data has been submitted for publication
and will be disclosed at that time.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
What
exactly is FNS and what are its ingredients?
STEVEN
PORTER: FNS
is an enriched cell culture medium that is specifically formulated
to provide the nutrients necessary for a healthy hair follicle.
It also contains a non-steroidal anabolic hormone and a specially
formulated vehicle.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
How
is it used and how often?
STEVEN
PORTER: Once
a night by applying it to those areas of the scalp where there
is thinning hair.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
Please
explain how it works?
STEVEN
PORTER: It
works by supplying the nutrients that are necessary for the
proper and healthy functioning of the hair follicle.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
How
is it packaged?
STEVEN
PORTER: That
is still to be determined and we are working on the packaging
right now.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
How
much will it cost and how long will it last?
STEVEN
PORTER: It
will retail for around 60 dollars and will last 2 months.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
I
am under the impression that the FNS product comes with a
spray type applicator. Would it not be more efficient to use
a dropper, for those targeting specific thinning areas?
STEVEN
PORTER: The
product is formulated as a gel. FNS will not be a spray.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
How
does in interact with products like Rogaine Propecia and Tricomin?
STEVEN
PORTER: We
have not conducted clinical studies to determine how FNS works
with other products. We expect to learn a lot from the experience
of persons who decide to use FNS in conjunction with other
hair treatments.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
How
long can people use if before expecting to see results?
STEVEN
PORTER: Four
to Six weeks. Before they have used up their first tube.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
Does
it require constant usage and if not why?
STEVEN
PORTER: It
should be used regularly for 9 months. Based on results, the
user may elect to use the product less frequently as a maintenance
therapy. The product's benefits do not require lifetime usage
at the same rate.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
Do
you recommend that it be used in combination with other products,
or as a stand-alone product?
STEVEN
PORTER: We
believe that the product offers significant benefits as a
stand-alone product. We look forward to learning from our
customers whether additional benefits may be obtained by combining
its use with other products.
HAIRLOSSHELP:
Are
there any side effects noted?
STEVEN
PORTER: No.
