LEAVING ON THE BOAT

Monday June 2, 2003

Due to my jet lag, my body was wondering what planet it was on, let alone the time zone we were in. I could only sleep a few hours and woke up very early in the morning before anyone else. I took a few photos of the breathtaking Athens harbor called Marina Zeus. The climate in Greece during the last week of May and first of June is idyllic, with the perfect amount of humidity and sunshine. However, I didn't get to enjoy the climate much this day as I spent most of my day sleeping after my early rise.

We began cruising towards our first destinations, Dokos and Spestes. Apparently we stopped at the beautiful island of Dokos for swimming and rest. Since I was still recovering from the jet lag and fell asleep for 8 hours I missed Dokos and breakfast. The doctors teased me a little for flying half way around the world and missing some of the most beautiful sites of the islands, but I was too tired to care. I wasn't sure what day it was at this point.

While I was sleeping Alex came in to the cabin and said the yacht was sinking and I needed to get a life jacket and swim to shore. I told him I'd rather go down with the boat and I went back to sleep. Fortunately he was teasing and I was able to finish my nap. Meanwhile the crew went over emergency evacuation procedures and life jacket instructions with those that were still conscious.

We stopped at Spestes island during the late afternoon to tour the villages and look for an internet cafe. Joining us was Harald, a patient from Germany who had undergone two FIT surgeries within the last 48 hours. Harald and I took a walking tour of Spestes. It was truly a pleasure to meet so many people from different countries. Harald and I quickly became best friends and language or cultural barriers quickly became non-existent.

I convinced Harald to hike to the top of the island with me to find a good vantage point for a photo of the seascape. Spestes doesn't have any automobiles, but every native has a motorbike. After dodging about 50 motorbikes on our ascent up the hilly terrain we finally found an excellent location for my photo.

Later we met up with Dr. Cooley and Alex Minonie to search for an Internet Cafe. We found one, but it didn't have Windows XP or DSL. It only Windows 98 and a 33.6 modem. It took about 10 minutes just to open my e-mail. I complained about the slow connection to the waitress. My new friends were quite amused and laughed reminding me I should be grateful this island had power, let alone any phone lines.

Soon we were called back to the boat for dinner, we were quite saddened to leave this picturesque island, but one should never pass up dinner time in Greece as the food is quite spectacular.
