Traction alopecia is a mechanical form of hair loss, often associated with harsh grooming practices such as tight ponytails and braids. It tends to predominantly affect women of African descent, due to the prevalence of such hairstyles for curly hair.

The patient above noticed her edges were beginning to recede after years of wearing tight ponytails. She consulted Dr. Sanusi Umar in Los Angeles about her options. Dr. Umar (aka Dr. U), recommended a linear scar-free Dr.UGraft FUE hair transplant to reverse her traction alopecia.

In order to safely extract the tightly curled, afro-textured hair, Dr. U used the Dr.UGraft System together with the manual Dr.UPunch Curl. The sharp, curved tip of the punch minimizes the issue of thicker skin tissue, stronger attachments, and allows for a manual plunging motion in order to safely score around the curled hair follicle. A comparative study found this tool to be 100% more effective than conventional FUE punches in a study of 18 patient cases with afro-textured hair.

See the full results of her procedure in the video here.
