I am a 27 year old whose hair at the front is definitely slowly thinning but it is still in the early stages. MPB runs in my father's side of the family.

I have recently started paying attention to the crown and the crown appears to be thinner as well according to the pictures I have taken. It's the first time I have looked at my crown so I don't have any comparison shots from earlier but it defintely looks thinner in the photos. At the moment no bald spot is visibile at the crown but I am concerned that over time this will start to appear.

I guess my option now is to think about taking finasteride and possibly nizoral shampoo. I don't want to jump on Regaine foam just yet as it is early days and it is probably best to see how one product works.

If I do choose to go with fin the big concern I have is the potential side effects of fin. I was thinking of maybe starting on a light dose of 0.5mg and then introducing the drug slowly into the system over time.

The photos of the crown show one photo in normal light and one with the camera flash on (which is the equivalent view I get when I am under bright light). As you can see under normal light the scalp is less visible.

Questions:

1. Looking at the pictures below do people think it is the right time to use fin?

2. What's the best way of introducing fin to the body? Should I just jump in with a daily dose and cut back if there is a negative reaction Or should I just go for a slow approach such as 1 tablet a week followed by 2 a week etc?

3. I have read 0.5mg of fin is almost as good at reducing DHT as 1mg. Is it then a better option to use 0.5mg if I am concerned about side effects or is it better to go with 1mg for maximum effect but cut back to 0.5mg if there are undesirable side effects?

Agreed. Back looks good still but front is definitely thinning. Getting on fin asap and Niz is a good placde to start. See if it thickens things up a bit and if not Minox in the near future.

Any recommendations on dosage of fin?

0.5mg or 1mg?

Also should I go for a daily dose or every other day?

start with standard dosing and scheduling.
Give yourself 2 months. If after that you still have side effects, then lower, alternate, drop the dosage.

-------------------------
Sep '10 Fin 0.8-1mg/day
June '05 Niz 2% 3x week

So 1mg daily from the off and then change if there are persistant side effects?

You still have a lot of hair left so it's good you're starting now. Personally I would suggets cutting the 1mg pills in half and take .5 everyday.

-------------------------
-.5mg fin daily 12/12 - 9/14
-1.25mg fin daily 9/14 - 12/15
-.5mg dut weekly since 12/15
-minox 5% 1x daily since 5/13

I was thinking that 0.5mg should be enough as I still have lots of hair and would be more than happy to simply maintain what I have got. It would be even better if going for 0.5mg meant that I could reduce the chance of side effects from fin.

Also I'm sure I have read that 0.5mg of fin reduces almost as much DHT (75%?) as a 1mg dose.

Propecia is dosed at 1mg per day. It makes no sense to take any less than this.

And Proscar is dosed at 5mg, should you take that as well?

There have been studies that show even .2 of finasteride dramatically reduces DHT

Indeed, I've just been reading various posts by Bryan and DecadeTwo (such as in the thread linked below) which make this exact point. Maybe I should be taking a 0.25mg dose instead!

In brief it suggests that anything above 0.2mg you may as well take a full 1mg tablet as it will have almost the same effect regardless of dose.

No you are meant to divide them. I can't speak of these trials as I've never looked into them. But I an a firm believer in following medical advice to get the optimum results from medication.

If I've understood the posts correctly, I guess it's a choice between 1mg or a lower dose with a placebo effect that makes you 'feel' better! Either way DHT levels will drop by a similar amount.

Definitely a lot of anecdotal evidence that lower dose = lower sides. Although science somewhat belies this position, I think that the mechanism which causes side effects is somewhat unknown (i.e. not as simple as reduce dht = sides).

If I had to do it all over again, I would start at .5mg ED and go from there.

I started at .5 mg fin, buying the generic and then cutting in half to save money and see you're reaction to it. I am now doing .5 mg days 1 and 2, then 1 mg the third day, but I haven't been particularly happy with my results of late and I've been on fin for 3+ years.

UPDATE

Well I have been using finasteride for over 2 months now. It's too early tell if I have benefited but things definitely don't look any worse in the mirror. I will give it a few months before I try and do a photo comparison.

I am doing 0.5mg a day as this has pretty much the same effect as 1mg but saves money (and has the placebo effect of making you feel you are taking in less!). I started on a transition by building up from a single day 0.5mg dose in the first week then 2 days in the 2nd week and so on till I got to a daily 0.5mg dose in week 7. I have been lazy with the Nizoral shampoo and have only used it a handful of times in this period.

Side effects -> NONE! Everything is functioning as well as ever.

Note that in my first 2 weeks (when I took just one 0.5mg dose in week 1 and then 2 separate 0.5mg doses in week 2) I 'perceived' that the fella downstairs was maybe only 90% as hard as before. This was a little disappointing. However, as soon as I mentally accepted that at least it was still working, guess what, everything felt normal.

Note that I spent the first 2 weeks anxiously looking for a change despite only having consumed a grand total of only 1.5mg of fin in that 2 weeks. As soon as I decided that things were ok all suddenly seemed to feel well. I don't know how much of this was real or how much was in my head. If I was a betting man, I would say that it was all my head because I was looking for a side effect. As soon as I dropped the worrying , surprise, surprise everything was ok!

My advice, stop worrying about the side effects. I think the transition method to build up the dose over a few weeks is spot on. Now I just hope and pray that the fin stops the hair loss!
