He doesn't wear a piece anymore apart from when he's on stage. As both an ex-KISS fan and "hair expert"
I feel qualified to talk about these things....
I've seen some photos from the "Lick It Up" tour (1983) where he looks like he's thinning a bit in the frontal third. But these are live shoes under bright lights and with sweaty hair. With long, dry styled hair he looked okay. However by 1984 he was wearing pieces. At the time he claimed this was because he had to cut his hair short for the movie "Runaway" but in reality it could have been because of MPB (although later pictures show it wasn't that bad. But then in the "hair band" era even slight recession was considered "unacceptable".
He then (for some unknown reason) started wearing absolutely awful wigs - what KISS fans call his Davy Crockett period.
However, his hair didn't seem too bad. In his late 40s (late 1990s/early 00s) (prior to his Davy Crockett period) his hair looked like this:
Also, as can be seen from his facelift photos he still has a high, albeit receded hairline. I always thought he'd had a transplant but looking at the photos from 10 years ago it could just be continuing recession.
Thus his current mostrosity of a haircut is a combination of styling to hide the hairline, hair dye and just a generally bad cut. Maybe HTs are involved in there somewhere.
The bald photo is from his TV show and was part of a skit where his wife pulled off his "wig". What we see in the photo is actually a bald skincap. That said, it shows that he looks a helluva lot better with a bald head than he does with his current hair helmet. Maybe he doesn't shave it because of HT scars?
Whatever, he no longer wears pieces except on stage. What you see if his own hair - either artfully sprayed into place or transplanted - it's still his.
